Bi-Fab Loom

Traditionally, the same big loom is used to produce both narrow and wide fabrics. Sadly, not much has been done for reducing the drudgery and fatigue of the weaver by using appropriate technology in the sector and whatever new has been done in this regard, has not become popular among the weavers due to various reasons. Many a times, the new technology developed for handloom is not user-friendly and hence not accepted by the weaver.

Bi-Fab Loom simultaneously weaves narrow width fabrics like stoles, napkins, and mats leading to efficient and increased production capacity from the handloom weaver. It helps reduce the laborious nature of work and improve labour productivity by doubling production capacity. The edges achieved are neat with complete selvedges on both sides.

Paper weaving handloom

The Second Life project

A large amount of paper (1% – 5%) is wasted in the country in the process of manufacturing various goods. This implies that every time we produce something, we waste energy (for production, transport etc.) as well as water used for the same.

Paper weaver is a new and redesigned version of a handloom that can weave flat substances into a raw material to be used further. This loom is specially designed to weave paper strips which are discarded every time paper or paperboards are used for making various materials of communication, packaging and brand promotion. The output from the loom can be used as raw material for various applications such as interior decoration purposes, partitions, table tops etc. The current design is a first prototype which can be modified to fit required outcomes.

Precision Tools for Bamboo craft

A comprehensive services platform surrounding a tool kit has been created, to introduce precision in bamboo products. This tool kit uses a single material resource - thin bamboo strips. Making these strips involves a certain level of skill and precision which currently only artisans possess.

These tools enable the making of precise shapes in an efficient way.The developed tools are inspired by paper quilling craft, in which strips are rolled, curled, looped or otherwise manipulated to create shapes . Further permutation and combination of these shapes can lead to many applications in bamboo lifestyle products

SoCHE efficient potter's kiln

Traditional kilns come with a lot of issues such as overheating of the floor and walls of the kiln, no provision for air combustion at the bottom and uneven heating resulting in damaged products. The smoke from these kilns is rich in PM2.5 adding to the already stressed ambient air quality of Delhi. The National Green Tribunal has cracked down on the potter community in Uttam Nagar and prohibited the operation of kilns during daytime.

The SoCHE efficient potter’s kiln is a woody biomass fired improved pottery kiln with lower GHG/particulate emissions (no black smoke for at least 75% of the operating time), higher fuel efficiency and significantly reduced breakage of the clay products. The innovative design elements incorporated are:

  • Improved combustion control by creating optimum air to fuel ratio.

  • Enhanced insulation throughout the kiln using a rat-trap design.

  • Optimizing flue gas temperature to redirect the flue gas back to the kiln.

  • Multiple chambers for firing fuel to ensure an even distribution of heat firing the clay products.
