Shira Clamp

Nearly 1,00,000 amputations are caused every year in India due to lack of access to surgeons skilled in microvascular surgery. The current technique of coupling requires the blood vessels to be temporarily clamped for stopping blood flow, resulting in the collapsing of blood vessel walls.

Shira Clamp is a surgical instrument that makes the complex surgical process of coupling small blood vessels easier and faster. Shira Clamp not only clamps the vessels, but keeps their ends open and visible to the surgeons; thereby reducing the required manipulation skills, the learning curve for training and operation time. A non-disposable and purely mechanical device, Shira Clamp is a one-time investment, which requires no maintenance other than good handling and sterilization. Folding Foropter

Uncorrected refractive error is the leading cause of visual impairment and 153 million people suffer from poor vision due to uncorrected refractive errors (WHO 2004). Since day-to-day tasks are often dependent on clear vision to accomplish them, visual impairment hugely impacts the quality of life.

Folding Foropter is an ultra-low-cost, simple device to screen uncorrected refractive error (URE) of the eye. It is made entirely out of paper and contains two lenses. The user assembles the device to create two tubes that slide inside one another, resembling a telescope. The user needs to look through the device at a designated target from a fixed distance, and retract the inner tube until the target comes into focus. The approximate refractive error can be obtained from the reading on the scale. This screening device helps users to self-identify the subjective quality of both near and far vision, to indicate if they need further check-ups.

Khushi Baby

In India, 500K children and 60K mothers die from preventable causes related to pregnancy, childbirth, and vaccines each year. Targeting those patients being left behind and drawing at-risk families to the essential care they need, requires a data vigilant platform.

We designed Khushi Baby (KB) as India’s go-to, rural-ready Electronic Medical Record system and Community Engagement Platform for maternal and child health.

The KB solution provides patients with a digital health record- specifically, a culturally- symbolic necklace with a Near Field Communication chip. This record is better-retained, battery-free, waterproof, durable, and costs 50 INR. Frontline health workers can update this record with the use of our tablet-based Android Application by simply scanning the necklace. Data is synced to a Dashboard, allowing District Health officials to download real-time, actionable reports from health worker performance to supply-side failures. Automated voice call reminders are sent in the local dialect to patient's families to ensure adherence to their specific full course of check-ups.

APNEBoot

Apnea is a very common symptom in preterm infants and has been associated with consequences like hypoxia and bradycardia. Previous studies by the CAP trial, Keith Barrington and Jing Zhao show that apnea occurs in approximately 80% of newborns weighing less than 1000 g at birth and 25% of infants weighing less than 2500 g or 34 weeks gestation at birth.

APNEBoot is a wearable battery powered boot device, which detects apnea by monitoring blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate. The wearable targets premature, low birth weight (LBW) and at-risk newborns in understaffed NICUs, in wards, in transport or at homes in low-resource settings. In the event of an apnea, the device sounds and lights an alarm for caretaker attention, and provides tactile stimulation to the foot sole to automatically reverse an episode of central apnea.

CareCradle

In India, 300,000 neonates die yearly from infection. High-risk infants born in government facilities are often discharged to low-literacy homes where parents miss warning signs of problems, causing conditions to deteriorate.

The CareCradle is a smart, easy-to-use cradle that is issued for home use to high-risk infants discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). A parent places the newborn in the cradle and pushes a single button four times each day which triggers measurement of the baby’s weight, temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation, and also records a five-minute video that is sent to remote staff. They review the data video for signs of newborn deterioration which allows for early identification of critical issues such as sepsis, pneumonia, jaundice, neglect, and more. The device also has voice-communication capabilities so a remote physician can speak with parents via the cradle.

Inito

Research has proven that huge savings in healthcare costs can be achieved if people modified their lifestyle and caught problems early on rather than waiting to go the doctor. Without a home-based diagnostic platform, people need to go to diagnostic labs to get tests done which is inconvenient and also ends up with people not tracking important parameters.

Inito is a small & easy-to-use device that allows a user to test for diabetes, cholesterol, infections, hormones, vitamins, STDs etc. - all on a single device connected to the smartphone. The user puts a drop of blood, urine or saliva on a disposable strip and inserts it into the device. An app displays the result and analyses and tracks these values to help users achieve their health goals. We have done a pilot launch of our first test- an ovulation tracker targeted at couples trying to conceive.

POORTI (a post-mastectomy kit)

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women all over the world with 16,71,000 new cases being reported per year globally. India harbours almost 10% of this disease burden with 1,50,000 being added to the list of existing patients annually (Globocan, 2012). Currently, there is no affordable locally manufactured silicone breast prosthesis being made available in India and other developing countries.

Poorti is a post-mastectomy kit that has been designed utilising a user-centric product co-evolution strategy where each component of the kit has been developed with iterative feedback as per the needs of the end user leading to both technical and anthropometric improvement over the imported alternatives. Apart from creating an affordable high quality product, we are the first in the world to develop a post-mastectomy kit together with a one-minute instruction video which provides a holistic solution to address the post-surgical needs of breast cancer survivors.

RespirAID

In low-resource settings, more than 50% of critically ill patients require ventilator support. India alone has a shortage of over a million ventilators. Hence there is a need for a safe, affordable and portable alternative to prolonged manual ventilation.

RespirAID is a safe, affordable and portable ventilator that hospitals in low-resource settings can use. The product also provides a simple user-interface enabling even low-skilled workers to operate it with ease. Our organization will serve tier-2 and tier-3 hospitals which do not have mechanical ventilators due to either their high pricing or the amount of maintenance involved. We are also exploring the use of this product in disaster/pandemic struck areas and war-prone zones.

Oral Scan

The existing devices for oral cancer screening the world over do not incorporate a multispectral imaging camera for realtime screening and detection of oral cancer. Additionally, they are subjective and cannot locate the most malignant site in a lesion for tissue biopsy. This reduces the accuracy of early cancer detection.

OralScan is a hand-held imaging device for screening and detection of oral cancer at the point-of-care using tissue fluorescence and diffuse reflectance. The device consists of multi-wavelength LEDs for tissue illumination, a monochrome sensor with imaging optics connected to a tablet and proprietary hardware and software that drive the LEDs and capture and process images in real time. It is also possible to determine the grade of cancer as soon as the screening is done. Being cloud- enabled the doctors can review the results of scanning instantly and provide timely feedback.

NemoCare Smart baby monitor

In India, approximately 3.6 million premature babies are born every year who are susceptible to Apnea and Hypothermia which are the two most common causes of mortality and morbidity in neonates. In low-resource settings where one nurse may be caring for multiple babies, these conditions can often be detected too late or even go unnoticed, causing irreversible injury and sometimes even leading to the death of the newborn.

At NemoCare we are developing a portable connected wireless wearable device to be worn on the newborn’s foot. It addresses the need for an affordable, highly accurate user-friendly continuous monitoring system for the detection of Apnea and Hypothermia in newborns, alerts the nurse for providing timely intervention and securely stores the data. India is the head injury capital of the world with very high mortality and disability rates, not because it cannot be treated but because it cannot be detected early. Futuristic Safe Injection System-2020

Futuristic Safe Injection system-2020 provides a green, efficient, ergonomic, versatile and economical drug delivery method to curb syringe-related menace by completely eliminating the syringe itself. Infant diagnostic pacifier

for detecting neonatal sepsis

Our product is an infant pacifier (nipple) which can be used for diagnostic purposes. The pacifier is designed such that it collects saliva from the baby, retains it, and transfers it to a detection assay which changes its colour based on the result for newborn sepsis (systemic infection). The assay can then be read by the mother or health worker visually or through our app to give quantitative results. The product has three main parts: 1) nipple, 2) aspirator end and 3) detection strip. The nipple ensures rise of saliva in the system and its retention and also prevents any backflow from the pacifier to the baby to ensure sterility.

Oxygen Nanobubbles for Intravenous

Severely hypoxemic patients cannot take sufficient oxygen through the respiratory route. There is a critical need to deliver oxygen directly into the blood circulation. As oxygen is a gas, it cannot be given through the intravenous route. We designed nanobubbles in which oxygen is encapsulated with a polymer. Each nanobubble is discrete and will be in powder form. Pediatric Perimeter

Pediatric Perimeter measures visual fields for babies. The device has 24 steel rods placed at intervals of 15 degrees to form a hemispherical dome. Each of these rods acts as a testing meridian and is lined with visible LEDs. A computer uses specific algorithms to control the light stimulus for testing the visual fields. Babies are placed inside the hemisphere and are shown the light stimulus during the test. An infrared camera mounted at the top of the dome captures the baby's responses during the test process. The live video feed is displayed on the laptop for the examiner to investigate the visual fields.

Amphibian Ambulance for Riverine Areas

Many places in riverine areas in Assam are totally inaccessible by road. These riverine islands and many other areas are affected by floods created by the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries in monsoons. As a result, the health services for the people living in these areas are badly affected. Although the government has introduced a boat clinic to provide health care facilities to the riverine areas, people cannot reach these in time since patients cannot be easily transported by road to these boat clinics in absence of proper roads. The most common practice is that a patient is wrapped up with clothes. On several occasions, they are transported in a handcart. Even in this case, where there are small water bodies without bridges, it becomes impossible to cross these. To bridge this gap requires an amphibian ambulance as a medical transportation to marginalized people in remote riverine areas.
