TRINETRA

Majority of the numerous railway accidents in India are due to derailments and accidents at level crossings during fog in winter seasons. The reduced visibility leads to disruption of road, air and rail traffic during the winter season.
Safe operations are difficult in thick fog and smog during this period. In the past 5 years, the Indian railways has lost in excess of Rs. 1.5 lakh crores due to cancellation of trains, delays in running trains and accidents occurring due to foggy conditions.

TRINETRA - the third eye, is an effective accident prevention system to avert train collisions, derailment and accidents on unmanned railway crossings. The technology involves a radar-based device that alerts drivers of any physical obstructions on railway tracks ahead, hence preventing accidents and breakdowns. The visual camera with zoom is used to capture a long range view of the track and presents it live on a mini screen of the smart mobile phone fixed in the loco pilot cabin. A thermal sensor system is used to detect obstacles in loco pilot blind spots on the track during fog and heavy rain. It particularly aims at collision avoidance assistance when the train is travelling at high speed.
