Zerodor Waterless Urinals

There is an acute shortage of water and a large percentage of the population does not have the access to water. To add to this problem, we waste a huge amount of water in our restrooms during flushing. A conventional urinal flushes approximately 3-4 litres which leads to a wastage of anything between 50K litres to 150K litres in a year.

Zerodor is a Waterless Urinal Technology that works on the basic principle of physics (Specific Gravity Difference between Urine and Ammonia) and does not require any chemical or cartridge and so there is no recurring cost. These kits have a mechanical one-way valve which allows the urine or liquid to flow into the drain line but does not allow the odour causing gases to come back into the restroom. This allows the urinals to operate without any flushing. Any existing conventional urinal can be fitted with Zerodor and thus can save anything between 50K to 150K liters of fresh water every year.

Saathi

Commercially available plastic pads have harmful chemical additives that cause itching and rashes in most women. By 2020, women in India using conventional pads will generate 48,000 tons of plastic and 280,000 tons of CO2 annually. The Government of India recommends incinerating all of that waste, releasing 810 kg of CO2 per woman with dire consequences for the environment.

Marlin - A robotic fish for sewage line cleaning

Marlin, a robot, mimics a fish's locomotion techniques to swim through sewage and polluted environments. Marlin was designed to put an end to the cruel practice of manual scavenging in this country. The robot can dive into septic tanks and relay live videos, and eventually assist in cleaning the tank. A two stage design is proposed, consisting of a crawler mounted on the robot to adapt to low water environment. The design incorporates minimalism, modularity (enabling plug and play of sensors and cleaners) maintainability principles, implementing a novel propulsion system (flapping fins to provide thrust).

Caddisfly

Several million people in India, and around the world, are at risk due to the poor quality of drinking water. Fluoride, Arsenic and Faecal contamination, among others, cause a huge health and economic burden. Even where interventions are implemented, they often fail due to a lack of maintenance and monitoring.

Caddisfly is a low cost mobile water testing system that has already been deployed in multiple locations across India. The system can be used to measure multiple water quality parameters such as Fluoride, Chromium, pH, Nitrate, Residual Chlorine and Iron accurately. New tests are being added continuously, with tests for Phosphate, and Arsenic being ready for deployment. An Android app determines the concentrations of the relevant parameter by measuring the colour of a solution containing sample water and a reagent photographically by utilising the mobile phone’s built-in camera.

The testing takes between 1-5 minutes and can be comfortably carried out in rural environments or on the go. The hardware design eliminates errors due to measurement and variations in ambient lighting.
